Formed in 1979, NEBOSH is the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. Based in the UK, they are an independent examination board that offers a number of vocational qualifications in health and safety and environmental management that are designed to meet the needs of all businesses and organisations. NEBOSH qualifications are recognised by such institutions as IOSH (the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) and CIWEM (the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management).
Over 180,000 people around the world have NEBOSH qualifications and every year over 50,000 candidates enter their examinations having been on courses offered by over 600 providers. Although a UK based health and safety examination body, students study NEBOSH in over 110 countries. In recognition for the success of the qualifications offered by NEBOSH, in 2014 they were awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise.
NEBOSH Examinations and Assessments
All NEBSOH assessments and examinations are set by its highly qualified staff who are ably assisted by a range of external examiners, the vast majority of whom are Chartered Members of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health or Chartered Members of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. Staff and external examiners have a wide range of health and safety experience in a broad range of industries, both in the private and public sector.
The Qualifications and Technical Council oversee NEBOSH’s technical standards and they are an approved awarding body with the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority).
Only health and safety training providers such as SA Associates Training that have been fully accredited by NEBSOH are allowed to run NEBOSH H&S training courses.

The NEBOSH General Certificate
Since it was first launched in 1989, the NEBOSH’s General Certificate has been studied for by over 160,000 people and is the UK’s most widely held health and safety qualification. Some people take the Certificate as their first step towards a career in H&S as it provides a good foundation for further study. However, it is just as suitable for managers, team leaders and supervisors from a wide range of organisations who need a broad and solid understanding of health and safety.
